Days 46 and 47: Work continues while we are away

Thursday, 28 May 09

On Thursday and Friday, the contractors continued working on our house while we were hundreds of miles away visiting my wife’s family.  We returned home Sunday night to find that the tile in the kitchen and in the hallway had indeed been laid while we were gone.  Sunday marked the first night of a two month visit by my mother and father-in-law.

We had managed to keep the extent of the renovations a secret in order to surprise them.  Unfortunately, the extent of the construction still going on was also a surprise.  It’s hard to say at this point exactly how they felt about the whole chaotic nature of our house, though they were very impressed with the work that has already been completed.

Once again, it is my wife who deserves the credit for the colour choice.  The tile works really well with the cabinets, and the bold wall colour makes everything pop.  (The tile has not yet been grouted.  That will be one of the last things the contractors do on this renovation).

Progress was also made in the hallway.  The old doorway to the kitchen had been framed in, and the wall was extended a couple of feet to create a different traffic pattern between the hallway and the living room.  Some of the old gypsum board and plaster remained on the wall down towards the back door, so we have a definite mix of old and new materials that are now unitized with several coats of compound.  In addition, the stucco that defaced the ceiling going down to the back landing and down stairs had also been completely scraped off, a process started early last week.

The transitions between the old wall and new drywall. Also, notice the smooth ceiling which had been coated with thick stucco.

So on Sunday night, we got our first look at the latest developments while we gave a grand tour of the renovation so far.  We can definitely see the light at the end of the tunnel.
