Days 35 to 39: The kitchen renovation

Monday, May 11, 2009

Only one contractor was on the job from Monday to Wednesday, but the kitchen renovation progressed at a steady pace.  The other contractor, refreshed from his week’s vacation, returned on Thursday, and by the end of the day Friday, we were ready for the base cabinets to be delivered.

The drywall was hung on Monday and Tuesday and the cement board went down on Wednesday.  Then the kitchen was primed (Thursday) and painted (Friday).  Not bad for a week’s work.

On Saturday, I did a little shopping, venturing out to Canadian Tire to pick up some closet organizers (which were on sale for 40% off).  I also picked up an LCD television (also on sale) for the guest room, but finding someone to open the locked cabinet took about an hour as the store was very busy and help was pretty scarce.  After that frustration, I decided to wait until later in the afternoon to go to Home Depot to pick up some QuickPorts and order our front door.

I guess my timing at Home Depot was pretty bad, as there was nobody around the doors.  With my daughter in tow, I didn’t want to spend too much time trying to track someone down before even starting the ordering process.  I vowed to return on Sunday.

Sunday was a beautiful day and my wife and I spent quite a bit of time just sitting on the deck enjoying the view of our back yard.  It was the kind of day that reminded us of why we bought this house in the first place.  And with the house finally being fixed up, there wasn’t the underlying stress that we have felt other years.

Sunday was a fantastic day for another reason–  the cabinetmaker delivered the base cabinets which he is installing today (Monday- day 40).  The granite people will be here mid-week to measure for the countertops.  Best of all, we can start moving some of our stuff back into the kitchen.  The upper cabinets will go in next weekend.
