Day 15, 16 and 17: Insulation and drywall

Tuesday, 7 April 09

The insulation was put in place on Wednesday and most of the drywall was hung on Thursday and Friday.  Only the bathroom is left, as we wait on the tub shower unit.  Everything is coming together and looks fantastic.  Unlike professional sheetrockers that we’ve seen on home improvement shows, these guys worked at a somewhat slower pace– probably not much faster than my speed.   However, my back is thankful that this heavy work is being done by someone else.

Three weeks down

Wednesday was the three-week mark of this renovation.  There is probably a good 2 weeks’ worth of work left, not including the kitchen.  If all goes well, and at this point I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t, we should be on schedule to be completely finished before the Victoria Day weekend (which is the week before Memorial Day in the US).

Kitchen plans are now in hand

We now have the plans for the kitchen.  A lot of ideas had been tossed around, from closing off walls to removing walls so we really had no idea what to expect from the first set of drawings.  We received the drawings on Wednesday and I don’t think there will be any need to revise them at all.  My wife and I also came to quick agreement about the style and stain we wanted, and we had already picked out a floor tile.  The only thing left was to choose our counter top and backsplash.  We chose our counter on Friday, and again, it was a decision that we were able to arrive at fairly quickly.  The architect is going to get a couple of estimates for the cabinets, which will be custom-made.  We’re hoping to get rolling on the kitchen as soon as we are able to move some stuff into the newly renovated part of the house.
