It’s a waiting game

Saturday, 29 November 08

We still have not sat down with the architect to discuss our projects.  Obviously, it will be after Christmas before any work is started.  The delay works to our advantage, however.  The longer we wait, the longer the money sits in the bank collecting interest.  Once he finishes a current project that is nearing completion, he will be able to focus his attention on ours.  He says we should be able to meet sometime before Christmas, but I’m fine with waiting until January.  I just want the second floor bedrooms and the main floor bedroom, bathroom and laundry room finished by the time the in-laws come to stay with us for the summer.

The other project in the planning stages is the addition and garage.  Since finding out that the property line is closer to the house than we had been led to believe, I’ve had to come up with an alternate floor plan.  The result is a downsized addition which should save us in construction costs.  Instead of bumping out the mud room, it now becomes more of an entrance hall, which borrows space from what would have been a large office.  I prefer to downsize the office (10×10 instead of 10×15) to ensure that we can fit a 2 car garage beside the house.  This is as important for resale value as it is for my workshop plans.  A smaller garage would be unlikely to add any value to the property when 3 car garages are becoming more common in new construction.
