Trim is finished

Sunday, May 18, 2008

I finished laying all the quarter round trim today and it looks pretty good, if I do say so myself. The fit and finish is some of my best work yet. I would have finished a lot sooner, but I did all the cutting in the garage using my dad’s compound miter saw. I could have brought the saw in the house and saved a lot of time, but I did not want to make a mess with the sawdust. Each time I had to fine tune a cut (by 1/16th of an inch or so) required another trip out to the garage. But it was worth the effort to keep cleanup in the house to a minimum.

Another problem I had was nailing the quarter rounds in place. I probably bent twice as many nails as what went in okay. I should have used pine. Not only would it have cost a LOT less, but it’s not nearly as hard as oak.

Almost finished?

Now I just have to paint the kitchen, and then I am finished the upstairs. Well, there’s still one more carpet to take up in one of the bedrooms, and then I’m finished. Of course, there’s the workroom, which I want to freshen up with a coat of paint, and then I’m done. Well, I have to fix some of the floor tiles that have lifted due to the water that came in, and of course the floor needs to be scrubbed. And there are some fixes in the rec room. And we have to finish sorting out the rest of the stuff. And clean out the shed and garage. And then I’m done. Oh yeah, and paint the front and back doors and the side door of the garage. Then I’ll finally be completely finished. I think.
