Fun in the sun… in a manner of speaking

Saturday, 26 May 07

Thursday I ventured into the great outdoors that is our backyard.  The front grass had been cut twice already, but I had not yet mowed the back lawn.  Our lot size is over half an acre, and I cut the lawns with a standard gas lawnmower.  On good days, I can cut the front and the back in a under three hours.  On Thursday, I spent about 9 hours working in the back yard.

First, there was the matter of cleaning up the branches and twigs that were scattered over the yard from the winter and a spring time wind storm.  Then there were the fallen trees down at the bottom of the yard, in an area that we are allowing to grow wild.  However, the trees were encroaching on the area that we are keeping up, so a number of branches had to be cut back.  The dead wood fed a bonfire that burned for the 9 hours that I was outside.  Then there was the grass itself, which had been growing steadily for the last month and a half.  Some of the wild grass was over three feet high!

Sure, I drank about 3 or 4 liters of water, suffered from heat exhaustion, and have a bit of a sunburn, but at least the grass doesn’t have to be cut for another week.  I sure as heck won’t be neglecting it for over a month again!
