I turned 40 a couple of months ago, and after the bit of landscaping I did on Sunday, I don’t feel a day under 50. Movement was painful on Monday. Nevertheless, I did start organizing the workroom– the first step in bringing safety and order to the basement so that we can finally get the heating updated. I expected to have the workroom organized in one day, albeit a very long day. That goal wasn’t realistic. After spending several hours working at it today, I revised my schedule to something a little less intensive.
It’s all about priorities
Spring cleaning is definitely on the back burner. Getting the heating done is my main priority as it must be done before the flooring trim and doors can be installed on the second floor. I hope to be able to call for estimates by the end of next week. Based on the length of time it is taking me to clean up the workroom, I expect the rest of the basement will take about 4 or five days.
Okay…just how bad was the workroom?
We moved into this house four years ago. At our old house, I used the 1.5 car garage as a woodworking shop. I foolishly believed that I was going to have a garage built at this house by the fall of the first year we were here. Alas, it just wasn’t to be. That meant my table saw, band saw, jointer, as well as all other assorted tools for woodworking, electrical, drywall, and plumbing all had to be stored in the basement. I never really straightened things out since the movers dumped the stuff downstairs. Sure, some of it may have got moved around a bit, but as time went by, I got better at working around the clutter.
It’s actually worse than it looks in the picture, but at least you get an idea of some of the mess.
And the rest of the basement doesn’t look much better, with similar clutter plus some demolition debris remaining from last summer. Should be a fun couple of weeks!

Ugh, i hear you about landscaping pain. Recently i’ve become a total convert to a homeopathic remedy – arnice montana. I’m no spring chicken, but was miraculously able to build a stone wall and walk the next day. You can probably get it in a health food store. My doctor even recommended it to me before surgery to keep the swelling down afterwards and it worked like a charm. Or take a bath in epsom salts – a great muscle pain reliever. Good luck!
