One down, four to go

Saturday, 12 August 06

During the first summer in our house, the local hydro company came by and removed five trees in our front yard that were interfering with the power lines. Since that time, I have had to navigate an obstacle course of tree stumps whenever I cut the front lawn. This spring, I drilled numerous 5/8 inch holes in each stump and packed them with salt to speed up the decaying process. Today, with hatchet in hand, I removed hacked away at one of the stumps until it was several inches below grade. I suppose I could have called around to various rental places to inquire about a stump grinder as featured on “Ask This Old House”, but that would have made the job too easy. And there are benefits to doing things the hard way: not only do I get more exercise, but I save some money in the process. The blisters are just a bonus!
